It's probably clean up. Something is going on behind the scenes. Personally, I think the world has been ruined by social media. Everyone is addicted to it, and only lives in the online world. Yes, out of necessity, it's also been an important de-programming tool as much as it's been a programming tool for the matrix. But I am so tired of living in a world where the only thing anyone does anymore is stare at their phone. It's destroyed and rotted our world, our relationships, our brains. At the end of the day, people can also celebrate in REAL life, like we used to for hundreds of years! They don't have to record everything they think and do every minute of the day.

I spend much of my time online not because I’m addicted to it but because there’s so much information and beautiful things that are so easy to find online which have greatly improved my life such as Tucker and Joe Rogan interviews or clips of Elon talking about AI or of incredibly talented people like the diver in the GoPro video who has perfect balance, total lack of fear of heights and perfect diving form. Plus all things are now global in our always online global civilization and being online is the way to belong to this amazing civilization.

I agree with both of you. I can't tell you how many times a day I want a recipe or I hear something on tv or read something in a book that I want more information about--and what do I do? Lyrics to an old song...how many vaxxes are required in schools nowadays...little things, big things. Important things and trivia. I Duckduckgo it and get my answers.

That said, when social media replaces personal, one-on-one interraction, we have a problem. And tragically, and I DO mean tragically, not sadly, that has happened.

14 of us --all family--were out to dinner the other night, celebrating Grandma's birthday. At any given time, 5 of them were on their phones--~!!!

Before the internet the most intelligent and knowledgeable people were those who read a lot of things in newspapers, magazines and books and radio then helped expand this but then look at what the Nazis did with these things. The internet has a downside just as previous ways of expanding awareness of the world but I think on balance greater awareness is the better path to follow. This is also what people like Elon say about AI and he says he started his X.AI to be ever curious and committed to truth. I think his AI will prevail over Woke AI. For many people in our fallen world life is a hell due to things like health or financial issues. AI will soon change this. What’s not to like about that?

Agree with you that the internet is so useful for finding information quickly.

Re: dinner & people being on their phones. I personally think it’s rude. If I’m with my friends socializing & I see them on their phones, I say something. We have rules with our family too. We don’t allow phones at our family dinner table nor at restaurants. I have 3 kids (not teenagers). They are not going to have their own smartphone until freshman yr high school (waituntil8th.org). I let them borrow my phone or iPad at certain designated times. But I’ve never not even once allowed it in a restaurant nor at a store nor if we are out (exception doctors office long wait). When we are at restaurants, people compliment us. “You have such a nice family, such well behaved kids”. Next table over, toddlers on phones but not ours. I teach them that it’s a special treat to go out & they truly enjoy it and have so much fun when we are out.

I'm not talking about watching podcasts or learning things. I'm talking about being in the world and one-one relationships and dating and talking and reverie and introspection and people LOOKING at each other on the street or talking to each other at a bar or restaurant. As I said, the internet is a necessary and great de-programming tool. We know that. That's where the "news" and "information warfare" is playing out. Given how programmed we (still) are now, and the horrors of COVID, which almost everyone obeyed, we would be lost without it. I have written on this subject as a writer and critic for 20 years, so it's not just some opinion I have. We are all addicted to it and many things have been written on this (even by programmers and engineers, like Tristian Harris), and we know everyone isn't catatonically starring at their phone and doom scrolling all day long to "learn" and experience the "beauty" of life, which we don't need the internet to do, sorry. Quite the opposite. We can just step outside and take a walk. We have to stop acting like life and deep learning, for that matter, didn't exist before the internet. There is such a thing as books and talking, which few do anymore. Nothing can compete with that. And "life was beautiful" before every second of it was being photographed, posted, exploited for content, and promoted. I've always said, the iPhone is a weapon of mass destruction. Talk to young people and they will admit how depressed, insecure, and lost social media makes them feel despite their total addiction to it. The phones have also destroyed civility and social conduct and being truly present with others. I wish we didn't have them at all and it was just a simple cell phone to text and make calls like it used to be.

Expand full comment

Fully agree with you.

It’s a true plague on society. I find it totally rude for people to be on their phones when socializing. I do mention it to friends if I see them doing it when we are out. “Hey put the phone away” or my younger brother who is in his 20s. I do not take out my phone when I’m with others. Sure I might miss a text. Whatever. I’ll look at it later.

My kids are not going a smartphone until high school. I signed waituntil8th.org pledge. In middle school, I might allow them to use a simple phone that can only talk and text only. No WiFi no apps. I don’t allow them to use my phone when we are out places and I limit it at home too.

I think you overrate the past and overlook the many people in our society who suffer from things like chronic pain, chronic fatigue, a disease or financial issues which put them on the edge of being homeless. I do like socializing with people and worked (CNC machinery) for many years with mostly immigrants from all over the world in Chicago where I live. Excellent people with traditional values but all these people from places like Vietnam, Mexico, Assyrians from Iraq and Indians from Gujarat had stories they’d tell me about their lives in their former countries which were horrifying. For a great many people in our fallen world, this place is hell. I’m a big fan of AI and follow it every day. Here’s a video I watched earlier today by David Shapiro who’s popular on YouTube and is talking here about the latest AI developments which have astonished and awed him. The best of times. Paranoid and ignorant post as usual. What's the "info dump"? You neocon lovers never explain that. You just talk about "spying" and "the algorithm" by ... the CHINESE! Because all Chinese are one entity. And of course "communists," never mind that China today is more right-wing in economics and culture than the Marxist U.S.

Oh no, if you sign up to TikTok the CHINESE can see your Google address! What an info dump!

It's a private business, but if the founders are Chinese then it's clearly all run by the Chinese government! That's what they are like!

They have about 7,000 employees in the U.S. who never saw any "spying", but you know better than they do, right? And you know better than Trump and Rand Paul and others. You know about the spying, they are fools!

And you know better than the thousands of businesses in the U.S. who use TikTok, and who will be hurt now. I don't expect you to know much about them, though.

And you know better than the hundreds of nations in the world where TikTok is used without the governments claiming it's a "spy operation". Not a single one of them agree with the U.S. politicians who voted for a ban on TikTok - not even the U.S. current and future presidents agree with that anymore. But they are all wrong and you are right!

I'm sorry, but I could not disagree more with this article. China is literally a COMMUNIST nation, and an enemy of our nation and our way of life! Not an enemy because the political establishment, or the democrats, or anyone else is trying to paint that them that way for selfish reasons, but because they do everything in their power to damage and degrade America, over and over.

And while China using tiktok as a surveillance platform is a threat, it's not the primary threat of the app. The primary threat is the subversive nature of the algorithm that they actively manipulate in order to brainwash our youth into thinking whatever they want them to think. For anyone over 30 who uses tiktok and says "well my algorithm is fine I'm not brainwashed!", that may or may not be so, but you're not the target audience that they actually care about.

Why do you all think so many college-aged kids and younger people think Israel is "committing genocide" against Palestinians, or don't believe the holocaust didn't happen? Do you think tiktok has nothing to do with that? It's because China manipulates the algorithm to amplify Iranian (who are their allies) propaganda in order to drum up opposition to Israel. And I'm not an Israeli shill or anything, I'm not saying they're saints or that we should even support them necessarily, but the amplification of Iranian/Hamas propaganda is a fact. Funny how you never hear about the war crimes committed by Assad, or the Turks, or in Sudan, or in Yemen, only Gaza.

TLDR: Tiktok is controlled by Communists who literally want to supplant America and destroy our way of life. It should be banned.

I agree. We in the western world want and expect things now. The Chinese are much more patient. They play the “long game”. I have no doubt they are data mining Tic Tok for tactical information as well as sowing seeds of discord and indoctrination. I heard something even more frightening recently. The “collision avoidance”devices in every new vehicle have Chinese made components. Don’t thing they are not using that information to produce down to the street level maps for future military use. We CANNOT trust the Chinese. Their reluctance to sell should tell you how valuable it is to them.

Expand full comment

you might be right about all of this but it isn’t the reason the Biden admin sought to ban Tik-Tok. they wanted to get an American buyer so they could control the content like they did with Twitter, Meta, Google etc. (this was before the censorship regime began to crumble). as for China using the data for spying and subversion, I do not doubt that is happening, but China doesn’t need Tik-Tok to get access to our data. they can buy it from many third parties right here in the US who get that data from Meta, Google, and every free app we use.

of course, Biden and Congress use the threat of Chinese spying as the excuse while Chinese satellites and drones fly over American skies unimpeded.

Expand full comment

You mentioned that they can get our data elsewhere, and that's true, but you didn't address the subversive nature of the app. It's by far their best means to influence American culture the way they see fit.

Another example would be BLM and the riots after George Floyd's death in 2020. That was also amplified by China through Tiktok, as well as the Defind the Police movement. Rest assured, China uses Tiktok to cause further divide among Americans over any and all politically contentious topics.

As for banning Tik Tok being "un-American", it is in the nature of things that the Chinese are "un-American". Or rather, "anti-American" ...

China is not communist. It is more right-wing than the U.S. They have a market economy with a huge stock market, private business, like for example TikTok. Their culture is far more right-wing than the U.S., no Chinese students overseas say China is communist. It's just that the ruling party can't change the party name and admit an error, that would mean a loss of face.

"and an enemy of our nation and our way of life"

LOL Propaganda swallowed in one gulp. Amazing.

There are things to criticize China for. But they are not communist. Read history. Deng Xiaoping was installed as the de facto leader after Mao's death, and he brought in other former dissidents like himself, who had been exiled to the western provinces. They changed the country to a market economy, staved off a Soviet-style collapse, and made it flourish.

"they do everything in their power to damage and degrade America, over and over"

Bull. Hardly worth replying to. I bet you still think a weather balloon was a "spy balloon." Sounds like it. Every large nation sends up tens of thousands of balloons, and they are notoriously difficult to control at high altitudes with their small propellers. China has satellites, they don't need balloons to find out U.S. bases exist and have people and vehicles on them. But Biden made sure the balloon was blown up completely so there'd be no remains to see the obvious, as ALL organizations that send up weather balloons say - it was obviously a weather balloon.

Biden wanted it destroyed completely so the rubes like you could be fooled. The establishment wants an external enemy to distract from their Marxist policies in the U.S. And for the GOP there are always some low-IQ voters who will jump at the chance of roleplaying the Cold War, with a "communist" foreign nation, when the communism is all at home. The GOP supports Affirmative Action. That is far more leftist than anything in China.

" It's because China manipulates the algorithm to amplify Iranian (who are their allies) propaganda in order to drum up opposition to Israel. And I'm not an Israeli shill or anything,"

Sure you aren't. You're just repeating all the BS from Breitbart. Where a former chief editor said in reply to a "you're not pro-Israel enough!" that practically everyone who runs Breitbart is Jewish. (1) In July, 2020 President Trump himself urged that Tik Tok be either banned or sold.

(2) The bill banning Tik Tok or forcing its sale passed by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in both the House (352 - 65) and the Senate (79 - 18).

To force them up in the mountains and make their crops rot, and kill anyone who tried to return? The Palestinians wanted a shared parliament with the Jewish immigrants, with the 10% who were Jews getting as many seats as the Palestinians, with Britain having the deciding extra seats. Instead the Zionist Movement slaughtered them, with weapons provided by the corrupt U.S. politicians. Your beloved Zionists have been murdering people and stealing their homes ever since. Last year before Hamas struck back they had killed many people, as usual, without a trial, and stolen homes.

The push to ban TikTok a year ago was about Israel, it's just that the media don't want you to remember that. When the Gaza holocaust began the ADL worried because there were at least ten times more pro-Palestinian videos and likes. Alan Greenblatt, head of ADL, was caught on video saying "We have a major TikTok problem."

Glenn Greenwald showed on Twitter how both the WSJ and the Economist said the ban was because of Gaza. Here's The Economist, quoted by Greenwald:

>> The proposal gained momentum partly as a result of disquiet over the app's handling of misinformation and antisemitic content following Hamas's attack on Israel in October.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Mike Gallagher, R-WI, pushed for a TikTok ban because of Israel:

>> [Rep. Mike Gallagher's (R-WI)] efforts [to ban TikTok] appeared to stall in 2023, but were revived in part by the fallout from the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, according to people close to TikTok and people close to lawmakers. TikTok's users quickly inundated the platform with videos about the attack and Israel's war on Gaza. Some lawmakers said TikTok appeared to favor pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel content, and renewed calls to ban the app in the U.S.

Alan Greenblatt went to Israel to tell the Knesset how important it was to "capture" TikTok and also silence Wikipedia:

>> "Pushing extremists off Wikipedia might not seem equal to the challenge of pushing Hezbollah north of the Litani River, capturing TikTok might seem less meaningful than holding on to Mount Hermon, libelous tweets certainly might seem less deadly than missiles from Yemen but this is urgent because the next war will be decided based on how Israel and its allies perform online as much as offline," Greenblatt said.

Antony Blinken and Mitt Romney:

>> Secretary of State Antony Blinken lamented last year that TikTok and social media is allowing the world to see "the inescapable reality of people who have and continue to suffer grievously in Gaza," whereas in the past the "information environment" was controlled by a few newspapers and TV outlets who could shape the narrative. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), who was interviewing Blinken, concurred and added that the US banning TikTok is being done to help Israel in their PR war.

Here is Antony Blinken saying TikTok should be shut down because of Gaza:

>> “Why has the PR been so awful?… typically the Israelis are good at PR—what’s happened here, how have they and we been so ineffective at communicating the realities and our POV?… some wonder why there was such overwhelming support for us to shut down potentially TikTok.”

Ben Shapiro of course claimed it was an "anti-Semitic conspiracy theory" to say the ban was because of Israel, despite several members of Congress making it clear.

The Jewish Federations of North America on Twitter, March 2024:

>> "We want Congress to tell TikTok that their time is up. We're done with the lies the platform spreads about the Jewish people and Israel. Take action now! #TimesUpTikTok

Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi concurs:

>> "Oct. 7 really opened people's eyes to what's happening on TikTok" and its "differential treatment of different topics," said [Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL)], adding that the coming election also fueled concerns. "People are concerned about interference using TikTok."

Interference!

TikTok tried to bend over backward to please the ADL:

>> TikTok started working with the ADL to silence criticism of Israel in the hope their site would not be banned in the US but our AIPAC-owned Congress shoved the bill through anyways and our puppet president Joe Biden signed it into law.

When Israel complained about pro-Palestine content going viral in the wake of October 7th, a bill without precedent was passed within just a matter of months to ban the site and force it to divest.

I'll readily rethink if you can point to one Arab or Muslim nation, just ONE, that integrates Jews into their society and can boast of similar percentage representation of Jews in their society as Israel does of their non Jewish minority.

You: "Anti-Semitism!!!"

Hilarious, you deny that the Gaza holocaust is ethnic cleansing. Even Holocaust historians confirm that it fits every description of ethnic cleansing. Israeli leaders brag about it and have gone to conferences where they talk about ethnically cleansing northern Gaza completely and populate it with fanatic Zionists.

Your reply: "No, some other Jews have been victims and that means we Jews today can do whatever we want! Victim card!"

Antiwar.com shows the truth about this, much of it from Israeli sources.

The Israelis have been murdering civilians for decades, and you pretend it hasn't happened.

Nope. Jews actually warn them to get out of war zones while their fighters hide behind civilians and children.

OK Seva, TikTok did have anti-Gaza war stuff and Zionists did support the ban but THE reason was that it banned is that it allowed people to bypass the narrative whether that be about Gaza or COVID or J6.

Expand full comment

Both the democrats and the republicans strongly supported a ban not because they agreed on Covid or Jan 6 but on Gaza because the destruction and the ghoulish behavior of the IDF was turning young people against Israel. Both democrats and republicans felt this had to be stopped, asap!

"The Chinese" - You talk the way you have been taught, imagining that "the Chinese" is one entity, the evil enemy. Why should "the Chinese" have to sell? Obviously neither Biden nor Trump agree with you, nor do Rand Paul and others, but apparently you know better.

Those you call "the Chinese" are private businessmen, who built TikTok. Which you don't mention. Just acting as if they simply own it and it's about "selling for a nice profit." Maybe someone should force you to sell what you own, and then spit at you for not "selling for a nice profit." Though it doesn't sound like you have built much.

TikTok also has about 7,000 employees in the U.S. Oops. But keep calling them "the Chinese."

"The algorithm is engineered to promote the woke mind virus. " - Oh, are you a programmer, then? So you can post proof about that algorithm? No, you are just repeating propaganda you have been taught. You don't know what you are talking about.

So you claim Trump is fighting to keep "the algorithm engineered to promote the woke mind virus" running. But you know better than Trump and Rand Paul, right?

Regarding "woke," that's all over social media run by Americans, so it's better for all when there are social media owned by non-Americans.

And there are plenty of conservatives on TikTok, using it to great effect for conservative causes. If you had actually read Sasha Stone's article you would have known that.

It’s very simple. The CCP is vacuuming up American’s data via TikTok. The app is feeding useless garbage to American users, while feeding their Chinese users useful, educational content. Just watching the meltdowns this morning proves this ban was a great idea. It’s a mental health issue and a national security issue.

Ubiquitous Chinese spy and propaganda systems need to be shut down. Period. This is not about free speech. This is about national security. America used "Radio Free Europe" to broadcast propaganda into the USSR post WW2. It worked. The Soviet Union collapsed in large part due to Radio Free Europe. Tik-Tok is many times more effective than RFE since it is on the personal iPhone of half of America, especially younger people, and is on 3 or more hours a day for many. It also is 2-way and captures the user profiles and returns it to the Chinese dbases, something RFE could never do. If Trump can convince China to let go of Tik-Tok for many billions, then it can live (the fact Bytedance has not negotiated to sell is very telling about the true intent and ownership of Tik-Tok). Otherwise, it must be shut off.

Apparently Trump, Rand Paul and others are wrong then, including Biden, when they say TikTok shouldn't be shut down. You know better. Good boy.

The push to bank TikTok picked up speed only after the Gaza holocaust started, when the ADL head Alan Greenblatt wanted people on TikTok silenced, and politicians in your beloved Congress said it should be silenced for Israel's sake. As Glenn Greenwald has noted - and as written in the Wall Street Journal, among other places. Which I have already posted here.

Funny how you can't post any proof of how TikTok is "spying." It's just the usual paranoia. People signing up with their emails - oh no, China can see their Google addresses! Spying!

And every other country in the world is also wrong - the countries that have not claimed that TikTok is a "spy." But they aren't the U.S., so they don't matter, right?

Funny how you paranoid amateurs never talk about that.

And 7,000 TikTok employees in the U.S. are also wrong, unaware that they are ACKSHUALLY working for a spy operation. They hadn't discovered that, but you know better than them!

Or maybe the thousands of U.S. employees are in on it. Maybe some of them are of Chinese origin! Then they can't be trusted.

The Soviet Union collapsed because of their version of Forever Wars and a weak economy. When Reagan lured them into trying to match US military power, that was the beginning of the end for them. If RFE was the cause, the Soviet Union should have collapsed in the 1950s.

There us some other agenda here.

I agree. Data collection is the least of it. If national security was top of mind, wouldn't we have done something about the tens of thousands of illegal Chinese who have invaded our country these past 4 years? How about the drone the Biden Cartel allowed to cross our country , hovering over strategic military bases and locations? How about the millions of acres of prime farmland and other real estate we have allowed the Chinese to buy? The Chinese owned food processing plants in this country. And the Chinese funded institutes on US college campuses. What about the secret Chinese police stations in the United States?

There is something WAY more than national security going on here. "Follow the money" is always a good start, but even that doesn't explain this timing.

"How about the drone the Biden Cartel allowed to cross our country , hovering over strategic military bases and locations?"

LOL That was a balloon, you ignorant doofus. Absolutely no one claims it was a "drone."

And it was a weather balloon. Large nations send up tens of thousands of those every year. Many veer off course at high altitudes where the small propellers can't do much. That one of them would be caught by the streams and move down over Alaska isn't surprising.

Read what actual experts on this are saying, those who send up weather balloons. Oh, but you think it was a "drone," my bad. Never mind that a "drone" wouldn't have the energy for that flight.

And you also think China needs a balloon with a camera to - FIND OUT THAT THE U.S. HAS BUILDINGS AND VEHICLES AND PEOPLE. So scary!

Because China doesn't have satellites, right? They don't? Then I understand your argument about the "drone." But if China does have satellites - and it turns out they do - then your argument is meaningless.

But your leader Biden made sure the balloon was completely destroyed so it couldn't be checked, so that he could then tell people like you that it was a "spy balloon" and say Xi Jinping is "scared" of him. Undoing the work his own diplomats had just done on a visit to China. But that's Biden, unstable and petty. And you swallowed it all.
