Shelby Steele and his son Eli were filming a documentary in San Francisco based on Steele’s book, White Guilt, when their car window was smashed and all of their camera equipment stolen.
Someone set up a Go Fund Me to help recover some of the costs (I did not set it up myself) but as of yet, they’ve only raised a small amount compared to how much they need. Here is their full post:
Today June 14 in San Francisco, while shooting their documentary WHITE GUILT, based on Shelby Steele's book of the same name, Eli and Shelby Steele's and fellow Oakland filmmaker Terrell Allen's film equipment was stolen out of a rental car in the middle of the day on Lombard Street.
The entire brazen act was captured on film. The Steeles called 911 but police did not respond to calls. Both 911 calls were hung up on. Eventually, they filed a police report. There is no hope of recovering their equipment.
Ironically the film explores how defunding the police has hurt society. Now, the filmmakers, themselves, have become victims of the very thing the film is about.
The Steeles were scheduled to do multiple other interviews which they had to cancel. Fortunately the footage that they had shot earlier in the week had been saved on a hard drive in their hotel.
Among the equipment that was stolen-- Canon C300 Camera ($6,500), Sony FS6 Camera ($6500), Sony 87RV ($4,000), $14,000 in lenses 18-80mm Canon lens, 35mm canon prime lens, canon 24-70mm lens, 2 Sony lens 50mm and 20mm, Sennhauser Microphone System ($700), Sennhauser boom mike ($450), 12 memory cards ($500ea), 5 batteries ($550ea).
Without this equipment, filming cannot proceed.
It has been a very painful experience and I am hopeful an outpouring of support would help them feel a renewed faith in the human spirit and can help their important work proceed.
All funds collected will be remitted directly to Eli Steele and his fellow filmmakers.

While I completely agree they were negligent in protecting their equipment (hopefully not also in forgoing insurance on the car), their perspective is worth supporting.
The fact that San Francisco is overrun with dystopian thuggery is common knowledge, but 911 hanging up on them twice while they’re documenting the devastating effects of “defund the police” is exquisitely painful irony.

This is heart wrenching but not surprising. Shelby Steele’s 2007 book “White Guilt. How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era” is a classic that prophetically analyzes and describes the destructive behaviors that woke fanatics and CRT peddlers are now doubling down on with impunity. No surprise he’d be targeted by the mobsters of the Left that I personally refer to as the democratic party’s re-cycled Klan. Dave Rubin discussed this phenomenon today. Apparently some drivers park their cars with windows open and nothing inside so thieves who don't seem to know how to hot wire a car wont smash the windows.

First of all, I am stunned that some people are not aware of the car break-Ins in SF. Given the cost of equipment stolen, would not it be cheaper to hire a policeman for a few days?
Btw, for as much as the topic is popular and politically sellable, it’s not defunding the police that matters, it’s the instructions that police is given, when to get involved and when to stand down that matters.
Before looking for cure, make sure you have proper diagnosis. Curing a stroke patient by a cancer protocol is a sure way to kill the patient.

If we ban guns at 10K deaths/year should not we ban doctors at 450K/year?

I know someone who had all her camera equipment stolen from her car in San Francisco. That was almost 40 years ago!
