I liked Sarah Palin and I still like her. I’ve know for my entire life that the party of “tolerance” was truly the intolerant party. It’s also been obvious that the people on the right have a sense of humor and can laugh at themselves. The “fancy pageant walking” on SNL was funny, even though it was meant to be mean. McCain didn’t have a snowballs chance in that election and everyone knew it. Bush Sr, Bush Jr, McCain, Romney, et al, is why Donald Trump has been successful. All of those men who tried to lead between Reagan and Trump just bent over and took the d from the Ds. Trump doesn’t. And that’s why he’s a “threat to democracy”, except that he isn’t. He’s a threat to democrat power, not democracy.

I apologize for the saltiness of this comment. I’ve had some wine and I usually do not drink. 😄

I hung out there in the 90’s when l lived in WeHo. Swanky place. I was in the comic scene and I too followed along with SNL. My friends were getting jobs on the show. I remember though, I always thought they missed SO many opportunities with Obama. That’s when I realized SNL is just another political media whore, never watched again. They haven’t been funny or relevant for about 2 decades now.

My bartending gigs were in Malibu on the weekends & I had a good drinking buddy who lived down the hall from me in Studio City. He was Second City (Chicago) alumni & all about comedy. I’d get home about midnight & he’d be up watching SNL. Knew he was splicing the main brace so I’d grab a bottle & knock on his door. We’d sit there “swimmin’ while watching SNL & invariably he’d look over @ me & ask the same question week after week…

“Think this is funny?”

“Nope”.

“Me either. What the hell happened?”

“They ditched comedy for politics.”

“Yeah - Used to be great.”

“Back in the ‘70’s & ‘80’s.”

Oh I’m sorry about your friend. I remember his face. I was a Second City gal in Santa Monica before it came down in the 94’ earthquake. Our circles kept finding new places to play. Oh how naive we were. Molly Shannon’s real character didn’t sniff her armpits 😳. They killed her spirit. She was funnier then the allowed her to be.

No, Trump is considered a threat because he tried to undermine an election. People fear he might do it again, which seems reasonable.

Or maybe you think Trump was just joking, and that he can laugh at himself?

Two Republican presidents since Reagan won, and McCain and Romney did indeed have a chance. They just lost, and neither had a problem with it.

Unless you want to start quoting the fringe, no repub since Nixon has been widely considered to be a threat to democracy.

Trump is because he is.

That said, I agree Dems tend to be more intolerant than Repubs, who often have a better sense of humor. Dems are always on a mission, which makes them boring amd serious, sometimes mean as hell.

Uh excuse me, but last I checked into the actual facts surrounding the 2020 election AND January 6, not just what the mainstream news reported but what independent journalist’s reported (whose balls aren’t in someone’s vice), and by looking at the actual court documents and hearings, it’s pretty clear the Democrats undermined the election. Severely.

I encourage you to actually read all the factual details outside of the mainstream narrative yourself. Widen your scope of where you are pulling information from. See both sides, both claims, see it all - then decide. Because no sane human being could ever continue to believe it was Trump once they see everything.

The Democrat establishment (and their followers) literally lost their minds in 2016. The rallying cry of how the election was criminally illegitimate was universal, and completely baseless. They did everything they could to undermine that election, both structurally and culturally. They sparked every kind of resistance, including a summer of riots, beginning before Trump’s inauguration. Was that a threat to democracy?

In 2000, the Democrats’ lock-step united message was that the Supreme Court illegitimately installed their political ally as President. Bush was universally tarred as “selected, not elected” and “not my president”. There was everything from desperate federal legal challenges to the pathetic outgoing White House staff removing all the “W” keys from the computers on their way out. Was that “undermining an election?”

In 2020, the Democrat machine’s own primary election was completely discarded when, over the course of a weekend, Biden was simply chosen by the committee and other candidates were strong armed out. But that was nothing compared to 2024, where the absolutely undisputed “winner“ of the primaries was summarily and personally removed - not only from the candidacy, but, for all practical purposes, the presidency. Was that “undermining democracy?”

McCain and Romney were, in fact, beaten and classy in their defeat. Hillary was so out of control she trashed a hotel suite and refused to bring her hysterical self to concede the election on election night (remember when election night was when things were decided?) Was she undermining an election?

The hypocrisy from the left is middle school level ridiculous. The grasping fools that parrot the panic call of “Trump undermined the election; he’s a threat to democracy” are pathetic. How many of them rolled over happily like a Labrador for every one of the Democrat party’s extreme displays of election contempt? Sasha (and an increasing number of historic democrats) fully admit to doing just that.

Trump is a threat to the establishment - Democrat and Republican. Equating elite backroom self dealing with “democracy” is Maoist-level insanity.

Trump has more legitimate “democratic” support than any candidate since Reagan - maybe more. Leftists need to grow up, admit that Trump is a threat …. to their centralized party power.

“Trump is because he is.”

At least we had a southern border under Trump and your democrats have already announced that if Trump makes it to the White House they will do everything they can to destroy his presidency just as they did during his first term. This is just not working at all.

“But the early timing, volume and scale of the planning underway to push back against a potential second Trump administration are without precedent. The loose-knit coalition is determined not to be caught flat-footed, as many were after his unexpected victory in 2016.”

“If Trump returns to power, he is openly planning to impose radical changes — many with authoritarian overtones. Those plans include using the Justice Department to take revenge on his adversaries; sending federal troops into Democratic cities; carrying out mass deportations; building huge camps to hold immigrant detainees; making it easier to fire civil servants and replace them with loyalists; and expanding and centralizing executive power.”

I always post my actual opinions backed up with links to credible info to support my opinions. Why is this so difficult for you to understand? I said “This is just not working at all.” Why would you assume that this is just something I just copied and pasted from somewhere rather than my “actual opinion”?

We lack a common reality, have become incomprehensible to each other and can no longer communicate. Where is the common ground in such an infinitely wide divide? There obviously is none. We always just talk past each other. An impossible situation. Could it be that the reason why America is so rapidly unraveling externally is because it no longer exists as a country internally?

I know Sarah Palin and met formally with her twice to discuss mineral resource issues in Alaska while she was governor. I was one of the first to congratulate Sarah, Todd, and their kids on election night when the gubernatorial race was called for her. She's smart, well informed, and asked excellent questions. She got stuff done in Alaska and at the time, was the highest rated governor by the National Governors Association. That's a big reason why McCain zeroed in on her. I was very disappointed when McCain talked her into being his running mate. First, I knew he would lose against Obama (the Magic Negro, as Rush wisely observed), but more than anything, I didn't want her to be subject to the horrible and disgusting DNC machine. I suspect that all this is more by design than accident: "Hypernormalisation Documentary -Adam Curtis" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr7T07WfIhM

From the intro:

"Our world is strange, and often fake and corrupt, but how did we get here?

We live in a time of great uncertainty and confusion. Events keep happening that seem inexplicable and out of control. Donald Trump, Brexit, the War in Syria, the endless migrant crisis, random bomb attacks. And those who are supposed to be in power are paralysed - they have no idea what to do.

This film is the epic story of how we got to this strange place. It explains not only why these chaotic events are happening - but also why we, and our politicians, cannot understand them.

It shows that what has happened is that all of us in the West - not just the politicians and the journalists and the experts, but we ourselves - have retreated into a simplified, and often completely fake version of the world. But because it is all around us we accept it as normal.

But there is another world outside. Forces that politicians tried to forget and bury forty years ago - that then festered and mutated - but which are now turning on us with a vengeful fury. Piercing though the wall of our fake world."

I have a question about Kari Lake. She reminds me of Palin, but if you believe the polls in Arizona, it doesn't look good for and I have no idea why? Anyone able to explain?

Expand full comment

I haven’t followed it closely but it seems to me it’s over abortion. I think the republicans wanted to pass a very strict limit on abortion which Kari endorsed and there was a big backlash against her for that. I’m pro-choice and I wish the republicans would just go along with something like a 15 week limit. I think that’d end it as a big problem for us.

Expand full comment

This would be amazing. If we could just implement a national 15 week compromise, like many other nations have, we could move on to real issues rather than let abortion sabotage every election since 2000. The issue is that technological advancements in the NICU altered the meaning of viability. Anyone who understands that combined with embryological development knows that there's a personhood difference between a six week pregnancy and a fifteen week one. Only the far left and far right to get that, it's all or nothing for them. Two sides of the same coin. In the meantime, the country falls into disarray.

Expand full comment

I was and kinda still am pro-choice but the tech advances have made me a lot less comfortable. Not only on the viability question (having lost a younger brother to something that is routinely survivable today) but also the ability to see a lot more of what is actually going on in the womb. It gets harder to deny that personhood doesn't exist until birth. I know that both of my children were a presence in the family long before that. I am reduced to thinking that you can't enforce a law that half the population rejects. Even RBG thought Roe was wrongly decided though she would have gotten there by other means.

Expand full comment

The Arizona Supreme Court wanted a ban on abortion and any doctor who helped the woman could get as much as 5 years in prison for that. But why stop there? I’ve often pointed out to conservatives that if abortion is “murder” then surely the woman responsible should be charged with murder. They always refuse to back off on it being murder yet then also refuse to admit that this is where their logic leads. I think in the near future science will be advanced enough to make babies in artificial wombs where they could also be enhanced for intelligence, looks and good health. What’s not to like about that?

Expand full comment

I think we're far away from the ectowombs, there is a certain need for blood, motion, and life to make life, however we are very close to using gene technology and IVF to enhance our children. The issue will be...can you have a choice or will this sort of conception be the only thing allowed? Like mandatory vaccination, will the government state that it's negligent to naturally conceive a child when enhancing them will mean no cancer, high IQ, no disease, etc. I think we know where this will end up going. If you're pro-choice for abortion, then you need to be pro-choice for natural childbirth as well. Something I've noticed is that both "sides" seem to be inconsistent about bodily autonomy, as the pandemic revealed.
