Those who have enjoyed having special status on Twitter with a blue check are kind of losing their minds right now as their blue checks disappear. I knew it would be bad. I didn’t think it would be this bad.
I heard someone say that Twitter was now unfair for charging $8 for the blue check because some people can’t afford it. I don’t think people should pay who can’t afford to pay. But the idea that Twitter was a level playing field before, or in any way fair, is laughable. Twitter was never fair.
I’ve been on Twitter since 2007. One might say I was addicted to it. I had a blue check verified account and an account that wasn’t verified, and I know that no one paid you any attention if you did not have one. That’s for starters. If you had one, you would get more engagement, which meant that people could see your tweets more than anyone who didn’t have one.
On my site, I had some readers who got a blue check and others who didn’t. They played favorites with some news outlets as opposed to others. Leaving it up to the management at Twitter proved ultimately unfair.
It’s really just The Sneetches played out. Dr. Seuss was a genius.
The husband refers to Urban Hipsters as Star Bellied Sneetches as each and every one of them has a big red (Soviet?) star tattoo displayed prominently. And they are very much elitists.
I avoid Twitter, FaceBook and anything that smells like them. Lost some corresponders because of this, but I remain happy with e-mail. For peace and sanity, I recommend doing the same.
I'm sure it isn't losing the blue check, but what it represents, that is driving them to distraction – yes, my grasp of the obvious is breathtaking...
Even without the blue check, in their minds, they are no less superior to those simplistic conservatives and libertarians, clinging to their bibles and guns – or to those ultra-MAGA Trump supporters. If the pre-Musk blue checks are the 'in' crowd, then I'd rather be on the outside.
I lurk on Twitter, now...though, I'm not sure just how much longer I'll do that – whenever I skim through my feed, I begin to feel physically ill.
Dr. Seuss was genius; I am so grateful I was a kid in 70's - Seuss, Monty Python, Bugs Bunny(Abra-ca-pocus), SNL, Hogans Heroes, Happy Days et al. Shows that made you think.
Twitter is like an oily stinky slimy stain on humanity. I rejoice in Dems/pols/media despair for having to *pay* to feel special with a blue check. I wanted to comment on your article about Bette Middler but I couldn't find it. Shortly after I retired from the trucking business as a driver, I took a job for awhile driving for the Top Limo company in Seattle. All the drivers that drove there at that time were middle aged men, all smart and courteous. One of the drivers that I got to know some, he got Bette Middler as a passenger and she talked down to him. Told him he wasn't worth a damn. Said she was going to turn him in for being all kinds of terrible. The driver told me the whole story and. that he never had anyone talk down to him. He could not tell why she went off on him.
I ❤️ this essay because it was short, had a personal experience to share, was humorous and relevant. The clip illustrated the insight perfectly also. And finally I enjoy the comments because many make me laugh, think, or both.
Twitter to me always seemed disjointed and chaotic. The concept ran, and runs, counter to my way of thinking through things. My best to those for whom it "worked."
I wonder if a strong RFK Jr. campaign could wake up a critical mass of Dems to what they represented less than 10 years ago.
I Have a big extended family, 20 years ago after 9/11, I was the leftist "true believer" in the family, going to weekly anti-war demonstrations. Learned several foreign languages traveling in my youth, lived overseas 1984-1998, always valued true multiculturalism. Spent my career as an English as a second language teaching immigrant children. Racially mixed marriage. Drive an electric car, have solar panels on my house, grow my own organic food in my garden.
