History sometimes pivots on acts of inexplicable incompetence, like the failure of the Secret Service to adequately protect Trump. World War I began when the heir to the Austrian throne was killed on a bridge in Sarajevo in 1914. The Archduke survived a a bomb attack by the Black Hand on his automobile earlier that day. A few hours later he was being driven through town in that same vehicle when his driver took a wrong turn and came to a stop in front of one of the assassins holding a gun. The Archduke was murdered, World War I began, and Europe was thrown into decades of chaos because of an act of indescribable stupidity. On Saturday our country narrowly avoided a similar fate. Trump turned his head and spared us that chaos. It is possible that the current Deep State is the Black Hand of our time, but it is also likely that stupidity played a leading role.
What happened in Sarajevo in 1914 has no relationship whatsoever to what happened in Butler, PA on Saturday, none. Let's stay focused on what we know--and what we don't yet know-- about it, and not on some other far-off event.

Stupidly and Deep State are not mutually exclusive.

Stupidity and luck are never far off. They are the engines of history. We are living through an historic week, so let's not be too modest about it.
