I, too, am an American. I, too, am an outsider. There are those who say we must fight (literally) to take our country back, but that’s not who we are. We are conservatives...we are traditionalists...we eschew violence for that is the tool of the Left used (successfully) to instill fear, compliance, conformity. We, on the other hand, talk, we argue, we try to convince...and we vote.

My three sons are pretty much liberal...their wives very much so. Their kids, having grown up with CRT, are woke. I love them and long to leave them the country I grew up in, but they won’t vote for it, so they won’t have it. I try to share some of the things I’ve learned in my eight decades that I know are true, and some things that I’ve learned are not...but they watch CNN, MSNBC, PBS, they listen to NPR, and trust anything they see on Facebook and read on pre-Musk Twitter...so while I’ve no doubt they love me, to them I’m a far right extremist, racist, bigot, insurrectionist intent on destroying democracy, whose only source of “misinformation” comes from Fox News, Rumble and reading Substack whackos (sorry Sasha).

I will continue to send them articles (like this one) which they will continue to ignore, and they will continue to vote the way the New York Times editors tell them they must in order to “save democracy”...and so the greatest societal experiment in the history of mankind will end.

My heart breaks, I cry for my country!

Don't despair JT - remember that old saying - if you are not a liberal when you are young you have no heart and if you are not a conservative when you are old, you have no brain.

I was a young liberal with a heart back in the day and I am now old and like to think I have a brain. Your chldren will get old sooner than they expect, and will probably start digging out all the articles you have sent them that they have ignored.

My father was an arch conservative so I grew up listening to Fulton Lewis Jr on the radio - no tv in those days - and hearing my father condemn everything liberal.--he especially hated FDR. When I told him I cast my first vote for JFK - his response was "What did I do to raise a daughter who would vote for a Catholic Democrat.".

JT, I worry about your story. But I’ll counter with my own. I’m 61. My kids are 28,26,23. We raised them conservative as we were raised. Not crazy town but moderates. Allowed to see the whole spectrum. But all went to relatively conservative schools and colleges and it helps a ton for them to not be indoctrinated in school. Likely it depends on geography. Our hometowns are Nashville and New Orleans and we live in Memphis, all moderate Southern cities where you can raise kids. Stay in the fight!!!! It’s worth it, they’ll come around bc their side isn’t reality.

Sometimes I wonder if my parents thought my future was as hopeless as I sometimes think my kids’ future is? Maybe it’s a generational thing…?

Never give up. They’ve been indoctrinated so see them as the victims they are. They were targeted and captured. Stay the course!

Dang, your firsthand tale about the indoctrination of our youth bums me out. And I know your story is happening everywhere. I am not looking forward to the future...

Well, one thing that's certainly changed about the US is that nobody's gonna make a toast like : "My country, may she always be in the right, but my country -- right or wrong." Of course, that made sense when the US was still a nation-state (one state; one race/nation). No normal human will fight against his own people for aliens -- right or wrong be damned.

The Founding Fathers created a Government that was described with Enlightenment flap-doodle, but in operation was founded on real-life experience. Read Jay's Federalist Number Two for the real story. And the Founders rushed from ratifying the Constitution to pass the first US immigration law (Naturalization Act of 1790), which restricted US citizenship to "free white persons of good character."

BTW, the "greatest societal experiment in human history" wasn't America, or the United States after the War of Independence. I suppose an American of 1940 could still have looked on the Colonists' petition for redress of grievances and feel some anger, but the American today (soon to become a minority in his own country) must look on the list of horrors and pray to God to bring back George III. The real social experiment didn't start until the 1880s, when the US allowed mass immigration from areas of Europe (and even from outside Europe!) of people who the Founders would have told you could never assimilate to a nation-state where the 'nation' was mostly NW Europeans (AKA from the areas dominated by Germanic tribes). One of the Enlightenment's (countless) idiocies was the idea that Human Nature does not exist. That man is born a 'tabula rasa' -- all ready to be reprogrammed by the first Enlightened Ones who decide to create the New Soviet Man. But, Human Nature always has existed, and it is innate, inherited, and immutable.

Of course, like every false dogma about man, the errors just keep compounding -- the first Enlightened Ones thought that there was no real difference between Italians, Russians, and Irishmen. Then (turn of the 20th Century) they theorized that there were no real differences between Europeans, Chinese, and Africans (poor Carleton Coon). They've evolved until today they believe that there are no differences between men and women. Normal people, who live in reality, understand that all three ideas are equally preposterous.

Just keep in mind some wisdom from the (European) Classical World: "Discrimination is the hallmark of the civilized mind."

Thank you for sharing this great American story.

"...it isn’t this country that has suddenly become so oppressive. It’s the power that controls this country. That’s a very different thing."

That's something that I personally need to keep in mind. No matter what the United States is or does, we are still the Americans.

Fascinating piece as usual. We need more clear thinkers, statesmen and stateswomen (like you) in government rather than the current class of grifting opportunists of which the Biden family is exhibit A. Thank you, Sasha. p.s. good decision!

Biden is probably the most corrupt current official in government today. He cannot tell the truth because yes, he is evil. As to who's in charge? Obama's 3rd term by proxy through Susan Rice and the other moles he has around Biden. Ordinarily, I'd feel sorry for an 80 year old slipping steadily into dementia, but he brought all of this on himself so I have no pity for him or his family.

Have you not paid any attention to the Treasury Suspicious Activity Reports on the Biden family? Over ten million from influence peddling from Biden’s VP country portfolio (China, Ukraine, etc.)? Sharing bank accounts with Hunter? Where do you think his mansions come from - his government salary?

Shawn, brother, not sure I want to get into this with you, but I need to break it to you, Joe Biden is not "a reasonably decent man." Unless of course "reasonably decent" includes showering with your teenage daughter. Etc etc etc. The "zealots" who you acknowledge are running the show control Joe with the dirt they have on him.

BTW: I don't "hate" Biden either. I'm just not fooled by him.

The Ashley Biden diary entry ( a diary that it appears she abandoned at a rehab clinic) recounts the effect showering with her father had on her emotionally. The diary must be real or the FBI likely would not have made the effort it did to recover it on the Bidens' behalf.

The shower story is believable to me, in part, because I have seen the videos of Joe's serial hair sniffing and other inappropriate behaviors with women at public events I recommend you take a look, that is if You Tube has not buried them But I assure you that they exist. There is a pattern of behavior that suggests something other than a "reasonably decent man." Not invented.

Not sure why you bring up those other issues--not part of this particular discussion.

And are you aware that Joe appears to have disowned as a granddaughter Hunter's love child, Navy Joan Roberts, ...not something that a "reasonably decent guy" would do, at least not according to my definition of the term.

Eleven members of the 2016 senate judiciary committee, and the results of the 2016 election gave us a Supreme Court that will defend the constitution, even against the loudest braying. They are not afraid of being “outsiders” to those pushing the current madness, even when their lives are credibly threatened by members of that mob. They would also “rather be hated than be complicit or compliant.” Sasha, you’re in good company.

Pendulums swing. It’s just physics - the further out they go, the greater the force pushing them to return. This one is coming back like a wrecking ball.

I am grateful every day to the conservative justices on the Supreme Court. If they weren't still honoring our Constitution it would likely be in the editing room of the Progressive Caucus.

John Adams wrote (so we may remember and celebrate this day) “Time has been given for the whole People, maturely to consider the great Question of Independence and to ripen their judgments, dissipate their Fears, and allure their Hopes, by discussing it in News Papers and Pamphlets, by debating it, in Assemblies, Conventions, Committees of Safety and Inspection, in Town and County Meetings, as well as in private Conversations, so that the whole People in every Colony of the 13, have now adopted it, as their own Act.

“This will cement the Union, and avoid those Heats and perhaps Convulsions which might have been occasioned, by such a Declaration Six Months ago.

“But the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.” He thought 7/2 when the declaration was signed would be the day, but it was 7/4 when the declaration was read to the people. Let the celebrations begin!!

I love America. I love our Declaration of Independence, Constitution and our history, both bad and good. But our nation is being stolen from us. You mentioned the CIA, and I think they have a large part in the recent events that are destroying us. When my nation declares me a domestic terrorist simply because I don't like the direction we are headed, something is terribly wrong. Happy Independence Day everyone!

And Happy Fourth of July to you, Sasha! Lovely commentary for the Holiday! Indeed, life is a short ride on a fast horse. Too short to remain emotionally mired in toxic political drama we have little control over, and overlook the reality that America is still a wonderful place to be and we’re all very fortunate to be here.

Small towns really are the best for raising a family and raising kids. The culture in a small town is so wholesome. I did spend some years in a small town and it is overall better. People are kind, considerate. Everyone helps each other out. It's great her friends are settling down young. Maybe she will too. Maybe you'll move closer to her when you have grandkids?

We moved back home to our hometowns after we had 3 kids, to be closer to both of our parents, so the kids could be close to their grandparents.

That's a great story, Sasha. I grew up overseas. I was an Army brat and we lived in various places on the periphery of Viet Nam, my father's main project for the first fifteen years of my life. When that war ended, we came home to America. It was exhilarating, exciting, and disappointing at the same time. America is many things, but above all, we still enjoy greater freedoms than any other decent place on the planet. I ended up in Alaska forty years ago and knew I would never leave. Truth be told, lower America is becoming a stranger place. The current wide-left swing of the pendulum seems to be consuming itself and I believe will self-correct before it self-destructs. The Heartland is still intact and will save America. Feels good to say, God bless America and all you Americans out there. It takes all kinds, but as long as we keep in mind that we're Americans first, we'll be okay.

Thank You for a window into your world and life lived. Evolving as it is.

Do not feel so isolated as there truly is a "silent majority" out there who

just want to live productive lives in a safe and welcoming environment.

The rest of the US is not LA.

There is a dedication in my extremely small community by the shore

that reads "to those who gave so much to make a small town better,

and a nation greater".

Find your own "community" of people who want to be a positive

contribution. Add your light to theirs and you'll find a brighter place.

Thank you so much for this. My father devoted 27 years of his life to this country as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army. He and my mother are buried in the national cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. He saw service in 3 wars. I pray that his sacrifices, just like those of the boys who stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, were not in vain. As long as there are writers like you who can promote the old virtues, I won’t worry too much ( as long as you don’t end up in jail.). I’m a Vietnam era vet, 78 years old, presumably headed for the last round up. Your essay really made my 4th and I thank you for it.

Lovely, excellent piece. I have to say that my lovely, Italian, old school neighbors explained to me why they moved to America many years ago. There are no jobs for young people. It is a very expensive place to live, etc. Most young people live at home with their parents for a long time. And after watching what happened during the C-19 lockdowns and what they did to the Italians, I think different of Italy now (and many other countries) :(.

"Ah, but it isn’t this country that has suddenly become so oppressive. It’s the power that controls this country."

A most crucial distinction.

"I am an American living as an outsider in my own country because I couldn’t survive living in fear as an insider."

It is a tremendous relief to know that I am not the only for whom this is true.

"I’d rather be hated than be complicit or compliant."

Hi, kindred soul! Pleased to meet you.

"Eventually, those who protested on January 6th will have a proper day in court and not a show trial. How do I know? Because eventually, the mud is scraped away, and the founding principles hold."

This speaks volumes more about your grasp of history, and your faith in those currently the custodians of the levers of justice.

The issue is that justice delayed is justice denied. For more than a few of the J6 demonstrators, death will have preceded their day in court. For several others, they will have grown old waiting - their kids having graduated high school and college, or working in a trade having completed an apprenticeship. They will never be made whole, those years gone and never to return.

"I didn’t know...I would leave the Democratic Party and the Left and become an outsider."

Like you, I never thought I would leave the Republican Party in 2017.

The fact is that we have both left the UniParty to be political outsiders in our own country - but our country remains.

I gladly join you in wishing America a happy birthday!

As most of us as Americans are not personally impacted, this has been allowed to stand.

That’s just pitiful.

I like the Italy vs America video. I agree with her about buying less. For the past few years, I've been doing Buy Nothing, which is incredible. It is refreshing and liberating. My family re-uses and re-purposes everything. We fix and mend and repair everything. We do without. Which is also liberating. We (usually) tell the kids "No" when they want new stuff which is actually very very good for children. To not be spoiled and to not have excess stuff or always get what they want. We give them a lot of our time and play and love instead. I have learned that the less you buy, the happier you will be. Truly!
